Croatia a good example of tourism
Croatia is a success story in tourism, and one of few countries in the world to record good results last year, UNWTO Secretary-General Taleb Rifai said at the signing of a memorandum on cooperation with Croatia's Tourism Minister in the headquarters of the United Nations' World Tourism Organisation. The UNWTO Secretary-General added that everything indicated the continuation of a steady tourist growth in Croatia in 2011.
Commenting on the first official visit of a Croatian tourism minister to the UNWTO headquarters, Rifai commended Minister Damir Bajs and his team for efforts to maintain Croatia's tourist trade successful and for following advice and recommendations from the World Tourism Organisation about public private partnership, reliance on tour operators and introduction of seasonal visa regimes. He said that the memorandum would help intensify cooperation between this organisation and Croatia. UNWTO is working with Croatia on intensifying regional cooperation in south and southeast Europe where Croatia plays an important role, he said.
Under the memorandum, the first UNWTO world congress of tourist reporters will be organised in Zagreb this September, bringing together 500 participants from the entire world. This will be an opportunity for Croatia to promote itself as a tourist-friendly country in many international media, Minister Bajs said. He went on to say that Croatia had consulted UNWTO experts in recent years, which was helpful in the elaboration of action plans for the tourist sector, leading to positive results in 2009 and 2010.
Asked about the repercussions of unrest in Egypt and north African countries for their tourism, Rifai said that a meeting on this topic had been held in Madrid earlier in the day and that it was still too early to assess possible damage and make possible forecasts about developments for the rest of the year.
He holds that the current situation can trigger off the redistribution of travellers to some other Mediterranean countries, including Croatia. In the long term, UNWTO believes in a positive outcome in the countries concerned, as they are much too important for global tourism, Rifai said. (Hina)

Croatia and USA sign open sky agreement
The United States and Croatia have signed the Open Skies Agreement that will allow for an open travel corridor between the two countries. U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and her Croatian counterpart Gordan Jandrokovic signed the relevant documents in Washington on last week. Speaking on the occasion, Clinton said signing of the Air Transport Agreement creates economic opportunities for European and American businesses as well as help increase the flow of tourism to Croatia and create new investment opportunities in that country. The agreement will result in direct flights between Croatia and the United States and lead to increased tourism opportunities for both the allied countries.
Commending Croatia for its efforts toward reconciliation in the Western Balkans region, showing great commitment as both a global and regional partner, and contributions in Afghanistan, she pledged America's support for Croatia's prospective membership in the European Union. Jandrokovic, who is also Croatia's Deputy Prime Minister, reaffirmed his country's commitment to its mission in Afghanistan, and promised to continue to be a responsible and reliable partner in the NATO and trusted ally of the United States. He assured Clinton that Croatia would continue to be a proactive partner of the United States in Southeast Europe.
He added that as Zagreb enters the final stage of working hard to conclude its accession negotiations with the European Union during the Hungarian presidency, the government's efforts are also focused on strengthening Croatia's economy. "We look forward to developing a stronger economic partnership with the United States," he added. (RTTnews)

Croatia improves on World Tourism rankings
Ninety-four contracts worth EUR 8 million were signed at Split's airport on Tuesday, joining public and private tourism sector funds for promotional activities aimed at attracting more air tourists to Croatia. The contracts are part of the 2011 Croatian Tourism Action Plan and were signed by the director of the Croatian National Tourism Board (Hrvatska turisticka zajednica - HTZ) Niko Bulic and representatives of county tourism boards, tour operators and private travel agencies. He said 90 per cent of tourists arrived in Croatia by road, adding that the contracts were aimed at introducing new flights and bringing new airlines.
Bajs said 2011 would be a difficult year for tourism and that Europe expected a growth of only two per cent. Asked if the current troubles in Tunisia would redirect air tourists to Croatia, Bajs said that regardless of that, it was important that Croatia's tourism measures were good and timely. 'Unless new flights are introduced, I don't think that any tourist would come to Croatia if they decide to replace Tunisia with another destination.' Asked about terrorist threats around the world, Bajs was hopeful that Croatia would remain a safe destination this year as well.
He said that over the past two years, Croatia had jumped from 38 to 34 on the World Tourism rankings. Bulic said the HTZ would attend fewer world fairs this year, but that this would not cut down on Croatia's promotion as county tourism boards would be able to attend the fairs. He announced that promotion would be stepped up in Turkey, Russia, Ukraine and Poland, strongly pursued in Germany, Austria, Italy, Slovenia and the Czech Republic, and that Croatia would be the partner country at a Belgrade tourism fair at the end of February. Boris Dragojevic painting exhibition in Split, Croatia
Boris Dragojevic is the painter whose visual style is easily recognizable and in many senses unique. The aesthetics of a surrealistic combination of elements from everyday life and environment gives a special flavor to his paintings. On the other hand, rich imagination balances the converging and intertwining worlds making of them new reality. The perceptible world and the sensual one, over and under the sea, their mutual colouristic plays and observations recommends Boris as a homo mediterraneus among the painters, who in his special but expected way finds the universal note and balance in the varieties of his central artistic message.
