Riva
- with the passage of time, the area under the facade of the historical core of
the city of Split facing the sea has become an attractive promenade. Due to its
appearance and because of the surrounding buildings it provides a most
impressive view of Split and is most certainly the most attractive waterfront
among seaboard cities of the eastern Adriatic coast.
Diocletians palace cellars - Entrance from Riva trough
southern palace wall brings us inside of cellars. Shaped the construction of the
Palace and made for the purpose of equalization level of the southern,
residential section, with other parts of the Palace. Their premises have a
variety of forms: central, rectangular, etc. The walls were used for the
imperial foundations of residential buildings above them, and the forms of space
probably coincide with the shape of these buildings that have disappeared design
houses and streets of Split in the Middle Ages.
Peristil (Cathedral and Jupiters temple)
- Having passed through the cellars, you will arrive on Peristil, a central
square in the palace in front of the cathedral of saint Domnius. It is a place
where the emperor used to address the citizens. Peristil is also a border line
between the emperors chambers and the parts inhabited by soldiers and citizens.
It is characterized by high pillars connected by arcs and two sphinxes brought
from Egypt. On the emperors side ere also the temple of Jupiter, Venus and
Kibela that can be visited even today, while on the other side a cathedral of
saint Domnius, protector of the city, was build in the medieval period. There is
also a mausoleum in which the bodies of Diocletian and his wife Periska were
placed.
City Museum (Papalic palace)
- It is located in the northeastern part of Diocletians palace, within the
complex of Medieval buildings at whose center is the Gothic palace of the
Papalic family designed and built by the native master Juraj of Dalmatia and his
stone carvers. Has beautiful courtyard with richly decorated portal and loggia.
The Renaissance building with a fine window decoration completes the ensemble of
the courtyard.
Diocletians palace Golden gates (Grgur Ninski)
- placed north from Peristil, made as Entrance to the city from the mainland.
Here you may also observe the external walls of the palace with high windows and
arcs where once statues of saints as well as guards watched the Enter.
Unfortunately, the interior of the palace changed drastically over centuries so
you will notice a fusion of early Antique period and the legacy of modern times.
Having passed through Golden gates, you will arrive to Strossmayer Park and the
statue of Grgur Ninskog, bishop from Nin, who already in the period of early
Croatian state in 925. insisted that king Tomislav allow liturgy in Slavic
language and the use of glagolitic alphabet.
Pjaca (Peoples square)
- situated to the west of the palace. As early as the Middle Ages it has been
city center. According to available sources it is known that this area was
administrative center of Medieval Split gradually shifted towards the new,
western part of city.
